Roundabout Etiquette

Roundabouts are designed to keep traffic moving safely and efficiently. As the seasons change and winter weather approaches, itโ€™s a good time to refresh your knowledge of proper roundabout etiquette.

Winter conditions can bring snow, ice, reduced visibility and longer stopping distances. Slowing down, staying alert and allowing extra space can help keep everyone safe.

Approaching a roundabout

  • Slow down as you approach and adjust your speed for road and weather conditions.
  • Watch for traffic signs, pedestrians and other road users.
  • Be prepared to stop if necessary.

Entering the roundabout

  • Yield to vehicles already in the roundabout. Vehicles approaching from your left have the right-of-way.
  • Enter the roundabout when there is a safe gap in traffic.
  • Travel counterclockwise around the roundabout.

While in the roundabout

  • Follow the flow of traffic and maintain a safe speed for the conditions.
  • Do not pass other vehicles within the roundabout.
  • Do not stop within the roundabout unless necessary to avoid a collision or respond to an emergency.
  • If you miss your intended exit, simply continue around the roundabout and take the exit on your next pass.

Exiting the roundabout

  • Signal before exiting to communicate your intentions to other road users.
  • Watch for pedestrians and be prepared to stop.
  • Allow extra stopping distance, particularly when roads are wet, snowy or icy.

Remember

Winter driving requires extra caution. Slow down, leave plenty of space between vehicles and adjust your driving to the conditions. A few extra seconds can help make our roads safer for everyone.
